My area of research is on Quantum Information and topics include:
- Finding out ways of building quantum computers so they might actually be practical. Major issues are how to characterize and control quantum devices in an efficient and scalable manner, and how to mitigate decoherence, the effect of uncontrolled interactions with the environment.
- Finding limits of quantum information, what we can or cannot do even in principle. Information is instantiated as the configuration of energy and matter, the laws of physics (in particular quantum mechanics) govern how energy and matter can be manipulated hence how information can be stored, communicated and processed. It is important to determine where those limits lie, and to push the ways in which information can be transformed.
- The development of Space Quantum Technologies in including quantum communication, distribution of quantum entanglement, and quantum enabled or enhanced applications in sensing, timing, navigation, and fundamental tests in space. Recent developments in democratization of space through the development of nanosatellites (CubeSats), which has lowered the cost of access to space by several orders of magnitude, provides a natural synergy with the minuaturization also occurring with quantum technology. The development of small, compact, light, and robust quantum entangled photon pair sources for space application would open up a wealth of possibilities for global spanning quantum communication.
I also have interests in:
- Geometric phase and holonomic quantum computation
- Characterization of Markovian and Non-Markovian dynamics
- Quantum cryptography
- Models of Quantum Computation (Ancilla-Driven Quantum Computation)
