| Steve Barnett joined the Department in 1991, becoming Professor of Quantum Optics in 1996. He was born in London and studied at Imperial College London before moving to Scotland via Oxford. His principal research interests are in theoretical quantum optics, quantum information and the foundations of quantum theory. He is best known for his work on the quantum theory of optical phase for which the Institute of Physics awarded him their Maxwell Medal for theoretical physics in 1994. He has written, with Paul Radmore, the graduate textbook "Methods in Theoretical Quantum Optics" (Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1997). Please buy a copy or two! When not doing physics, he
enjoys playing the viola with the Glasgow Orchestral Society, playing
croquet and especially spending time with his family: Claire,
